A professional organization, also called a professional association or professional body, is created to advance a particular profession. it also supports the interests of people working in that profession and serve the public good. It may facilitates innovation, communication and connection. A professional organization typically requires members to pay dues. It has an elected body for conducting the affairs of the organization and may include several subcommittees or functional areas. Professional organizations can be both national or international, and often have close ties to colleges and universities with degree programs in that field.

Council of Architecture (COA) is many times misconstrued as a professional organization, which it is not.

COA is a Statutory Body created by the Act of the Parliament. The main purpose of COA is not to protect the interests of the Architects, but to protect the general public against unqualified persons from providing Architectural service. We will study this in detail in another IDEAMMOC about the Architects Act

On the other hand, The Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) is a professional organization created to serve the interest of its members who are Architects and generally works for the betterment of the Architects and the profession of architecture
