The concept of modular design was prominent in all works of legendary Architect Le Corbusier. He had established The Modulor, an anthropometric scale of proportions. This universal scale was later adopted in most of his projects. His idea of modular planning can be seen in one of his earlier projects, Domino, a housing prototype consisting of horizontal slabs and pilotis with a staircase. It was a prototype for the mass production of housing the units could be aligned in a series like dominoes, to make row houses of different patterns.

It consisted of concrete slabs supported by a minimal number of thin, reinforced concrete columns around the edges, with a stairway providing access to each level on one side of the floor plan.

Modular Construction :

Modular construction is a process by which, components of buildings are prefabricated off-site and assembled on site. In this system, each component is designed on a dimension and space co-ordination concept.

These modules are essentially box-like structural units which after assembling, make up the entire structure.
