Hot and Wet climatic zone

In this course we will learn about Hot & Wet Climatic zones.

Characteristics of Hot and Wet climatic zone
Analysis of design interventions with respect to characteristics of the climatic zone
Traditional Design response to climate
Design principles for Hot and Wet climatic zone

The most prominent characteristics of this climate are the hot, sticky conditions and the continual presence of dampness. Air temperature remains moderately high between 21 and 37 degrees Celcius, with little variation between day and night. It remains more or less close to normal skin temperature. Humidity is high during all seasons. Relative humidity is high up to 75%. It varies between 55 to 100 %. Heavy cloud cover almost 60 to 90 % and water vapour in the air act as a filter to direct solar radiation, it is thus reduced and mostly diffused – but clouds also prevent re-radiation from the earth at night. High precipitation of 150 – 200 cm is experienced in this zone. Moisture in the air combined with moderate heat and high rainfall is favorable to the growth of vegetation. The plant cover of the ground reduces reflected radiation, and lessens the heating up of the ground surface. Winds are generally of low speed, variable in speed, but almost constant in direction.
