Working Drawings are prepared to provide dimensioned graphical information that can be used by a contractor to construct the building, or by suppliers to fabricate components of the building or to assemble or install components.

They include architectural drawings, structural drawings, civil drawings, mechanical drawings and electrical drawings.

Traditionally, Working Drawings consist of two-dimensional drawings of the buildings or components such as plans, sections and elevations and other details. They are drawn to scale either by hand drafting, or prepared using Computer-Aided Design software (CAD)

However, nowadays, building information modelling (BIM) is being used to create three-dimensional representations of buildings and their components for construction. These are in the form of a virtual construction model and include several different models prepared by different members of the project team.. These can be harvested to generate two-dimensional drawings to form Working drawings traditionally. However, more and more Architects now share the BIM itself as a working drawings in the Contractors are competent enough to understand and can use the BIM.

Working drawings include title blocks, dimensions, notations and symbols. These must be consistent with industry standards so that their precise meaning is clear and can be understood similarly by all concerned. information included in Specifications should not be duplicated in working drawings this may lead to confusion.
