Most buildings have services in addition to civil work. These may be like Water supply, sanitation and electricity. Some buildings may also have specialised services like HVAC, Acoustics etc. We may have to routinely find out quantities for these items of construction in building services.
Sometimes during estimation, a percentage of the civil cost is set aside for the usual services like Water supply, sanitation and electrification. For residential buildings, it is between 15% and 20% of the civil cost. However, we must calculate the quantities and rates for the various items of construction in the building services before tendering. We also need this for checking and finalising Contractor’s or subcontractor’s bills.
Most quantities in building services are measured in numbers or running lengths and such quantities are easy to calculate. However, the rate analysis of most of the items requires a fair bit of skill.
