Deep foundations are those win which the depth of the foundation is very large as compared to its width. These type of foundations are provided where the bearing capacity of the soil low or negligible, or loads of the building is much more. Deep foundations are not constructed by ordinary methods of open-pit excavations.
Deep foundations are of following types:
Pile Foundation
Pier foundation
Caisson or well foundation.
Pile foundations are commonly used in building construction. Pile foundations are used in the following conditions :
The load of the superstructure is heavy and its distribution is uneven.
The topsoil has poor bearing capacity.
The subsoil water level is high
There are large fluctuations in subsoil water
The structure is situated on the seashore or river bed.
Canal or deep drainage lines exist near the foundations
The topsoil is of expansive nature.
