Introduction to high rise structures
The building is considered a high rise when the structural analysis and designs are affected by Lateral loads, particularly sway caused by such load. Under wind load, the overturning moment at the base of the building happens.
Any building that is dependent on vertical mechanical transportation can be termed as a high rise building. Various bodies have defined high-rise; The International Conference on Fire Safety in High-Rise Buildings defined a high-rise as “any structure where the height can have a serious impact on evacuation”.
The exact height above which a particular building is deemed a high-rise is specified by fire and building codes for the country, region, state, or city where the building is located. When the building exceeds the specified height, then fire, an ever-present danger in such facilities, must be fought by fire personnel from inside the building rather than from outside using fire hoses and ladders.
Any building with a refuge floor,8th floor can be termed as a Multi-story building. Multi-Story building having 14 floors or more is termed as High Rise.
With the advent of urban influx, scarcity of land in urban areas. High demand of land leads to increase land values in these areas. All of these factors lead to high-density planning. Vertical expansion means they can accommodate more residential/commercial space per square meter of ground floor than single-story buildings that take up more ground floor or land. They are suitable for highly populated or overpopulated countries where there is a shortage of land.
And the first 10-story Home Insurance Building was built-in Chicago in 1885.
High-Density developments, which concentrate multiple dwellings, and offices, etc. into a single development. This reduces the strain on Urban infrastructure like roads, water supply, sewage, etc as the connectivity needs to be provided to only 1 location as compared to low rises, where every dwelling unit needs a public infrastructure connectivity.
With the advancement in technology and human aspiration to build higher and higher today we are building structures that are around 800 mts tall , Burj Khalifa has 163 floors.
Two major developments led to the ever-increasing skyline:
1.In 1853, an American, Elisha Graves Otis invented the world’s first safety lift or elevator.
This new form of vertical transportation enabled people to travel safely upward at a much greater speed and with considerably less effort.
2.The introduction of steel frames as structural members, in the 1870s. This helped in replacing the weaker combination of cast iron and wood previously used in Construction.
This new method of construction reduced the thickness of walls, increased valuable floor space, and because it weighed much less than masonry, allowed increase in height of the structures.
