The history of what we now call landscape today did not spring up as landscape at once, one must understand this, and look after the multiple meanings the word ‘landscape’ has to offer in the context of society and technology. The roots of the word ‘landscape’ are found in Medieval Western Europe, but the inception of the concept to tame the nature to extract the best of its values such as medicinal, aromatic, buffering’s, foregrounds and finally backgrounds dates long back to the River Valley Civilizations. We will discuss the etymology and meanings of the word ‘landscape’ related to the differentiation of activities that form the landscape. And later look at the consecutive phases of the history with minutiae attitude and finally Third look at some of the changes in the landscape since the introduction of formal definitions of landscape.

But before we dig deep into the intricacies of How Did Landscape come to life, we must try and understand the difference between Gardening and Landscaping. Both of them though revolve around nurturing, developing and enhancing the natural qualities of Plants, shrubberies, trees and earth even at times. But to be precise Gardening is the activity of growing plants and can range from looking after and tending to a single potted plant to acres of plants across a field. Whereas Landscaping is a professional approach towards “Gardening” itself. It is a large sector that comprises of the art of organizing, Water bodies, Sculptures, Topiaries, Green coverages, layering of plants in a particular manner, Sculpting the plants themselves, mixing up of recreational areas and activities in a manner that would please the onlooker.
