Evolution of Urbanity

History tells us that the human being even though known as a caveman, caves were his temporary shelter as he was always a nomad traveling for food. But when he realized the idea of producing his food using agriculture, he understood the need of settling in one place. As agriculture came out to be a yearlong activity. He started to settle down – specifically near the river, in the fertile basins of the river, beneficial for agriculture. He started settling in groups to stay protected against animal attacks. These groups further expanded and societies started to evolve. Thus, the need to set some rules for society and settlements was felt since many people with interdependent needs started staying close to each other unlike caveman or nomad.

The physical nature of these settlements showed few typical features. As humans started settling together in groups, the Group of hutments started forming close together. It was protected by a fence or some kind of barrier which marked his territory and from protection against wind animals. This resulted in the formation of Tribes. Further ahead, the group expanded and society was formed. But there was a need for the formation of some kind of order in societal formation. The way groups of people lived needed to be defined. There was a necessity of laying some rules on how people settle and have their houses and businesses. Which marked the Beginning of town planning – Urbanity. The very word ‘civilization’ is associated with becoming ‘civilized’ – to start living in groups – thus becoming social – becoming ‘urban’.
