In this MOOC let us understand the region of West Asia and the architectural developments which took place in this region.

Today historians call the Ancient Western Asia region, which is modern-day Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Turkey, southwestern Russia, Iraq and Iran. The region of West Asia is the birthplace of three Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam as well as Zoroastrianism.

The development of Islamic architecture can be divided into two phases: –

One in Mediterranean – 300 BCE to 800 CE

Other in central Asia – 800 CE to 1900 CE

In this MOOC we will look into the first phase of development from 300 BCE to 800 CE. To understand Islamic history and culture we need to look at various influences of these different periods, with the traces of the Greek, and the Pre-Islamic Persian cultures.
