Before the 1800s, any talented and skilled person could become an architect through apprenticeship and self-study. Ancient Greeks, Roman and others much later got constructed  great buildings built by masons, carpenters, and other artisans and tradesmen. The Roman builder Marcus Vitruvius Pollio is often cited as the first architect. us, Vitruvius documented building methods and acceptable styles to be used for construction. His three principles of architecture—firmitas, utilitas, venustas—are used as models of what architecture should be even today. The famous Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio apprenticed embraces ideas of symmetry and proportion.Sir Christopher Wren,a mathematician and scientist designed some of London’s most important buildings after the Great Fire of 1666.

In India even as early as Mahabharat times Maya finds mention as a Master builder Architect. Throughout known history great edifices were created under the patronage of Kings and wealthy merchants by clans of Master builders Architects called the Sthapatis.

The Architect as a professional that we know today was completely alien idea in India. We knew Master Builders the clans of Sthapatis. The british rulers of India wanted to build large structures completely English in style which would fill the native Indians with awe by their grandeur. These structures obviously were designed by British Architects and built at first by Military Engineers, and later by civilians trained in India, in techniques of building, aptly called Civil Engineers. A draftsman’s course was started at Sir J.J.School to create local persons who could decipher the drawings sent from England . This was the beginning of Profession of Architects in India.

In the architectural profession and Architecture Online Courses, technical and environmental knowledge, design and construction management, and an understanding of business are as important as design. However, the design is the driving force throughout the project and beyond.
